If you are interested in one of our foster rabbits, the adoption process is as follows:
STEP 1: Become educated.
→ Make sure that you know what goes into having a rabbit be part of your family. Rabbit.org is a great place to start. Make sure that you are ready to have your rabbit for 10+ years in a spacious indoor area. Your bank account needs to be ready, too – vet bills can be thousands of dollars. You are welcome to ask us for help in understanding rabbit care.
STEP 2: Review our adoption policies NMHRS Adoption Policies Feb 2014.
→ If you don’t agree with any of these, then a rabbit is not the right pet for you.
STEP 3: Complete the adoption application.
→ Our adoption application helps us match you to the right rabbit for your needs and lifestyle. Please do not rush through this – we can tell when you have not put enough thought into owning a rabbit.
STEP 4: A NM House Rabbit Society volunteer will contact you after approving your application to arrange a time to introduce you to one or more of our rabbits.
STEP 5: Sign the adoption contract and pay the adoption fee.
In addition to our foster rabbits, you can also adopt from the Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society, Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department, & Bernalillo County Animal Care and Resource Center. Rabbits adopted from any of these locations will be spayed/neutered. Only rabbits adopted from NMHRS or the Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society are also vaccinated for RHDV2.
