About Us

New Mexico House Rabbit Society is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization whose mission is to help abandoned and unwanted rabbits in New Mexico. We are foster-based with no physical location. We only take rabbits from local shelters and do not take rabbits from the public.

While we often have foster rabbits with no medical history, we specialize in taking in rabbits from shelters who have medical conditions that are beyond the capabilities of the shelter veterinarians. We are often a shelter rabbit’s only chance at receiving the life-saving care they need. Because of this, the vast majority of your donations are used to pay vet bills. Read about some of our medical cases here.

New Mexico House Rabbit Society also assists the public by providing information on proper house rabbit care through our “hopline,” email, social media, teaching bunny care classes, and in person at events.

In 2020, NMHRS became the first rabbit rescue in the country to organize and execute an RHDV2 clinic for the public. We continue to hold this important clinic annually.
